Couples underestimate how much they will have to spend on their wedding day by roughly 40 percent, according to a new report released by WeddingWire, a wedding website. The cost can greatly vary depending on the location, but the national average is around $36,000, the study shows.
The ceremony and reception take up the bulk of the cost, at about $27,000, according to WeddingWire. The engagement ring and the honeymoon add another $9,000 to the bill.
Even though people are getting married later in life, millennial couples can still count on their families to help cover costs. On average, parents and other family members pay for up to 60 percent of the wedding, the study shows, sometimes making risky moves. Some withdraw money from their savings and one in 10 parents dip into their retirement account to contribute to their child's wedding.
Couples spend about $216 on each guest and more than 60 percent of them will book rooms for their guests, WeddingWire found. The average number of guests is 127.
"Weddings in 2017 showed us that couples are focused on guests, as we see them pulling out all the stops to create a truly memorable experience for their wedding attendees," said Kristen Maxwell Cooper, editor in chief of wedding planning site The Knot.
The two most expensive cities to get married in the U.S. are New York and Boston, according to the WeddingWire report. Those who marry in Manhattan spend up to $60,000 just on their ceremony and reception.
Couples getting married in Connecticut can expect to pay a few thousand dollars over the national average according to a study by The Knot. The report looked at 2017 numbers and came up with the average costs for weddings across the nation, and for Connecticut that was $47,435.
