The Stamford Thunder U16 team won the Senior Little League state championship July 13 and is advancing to the Eastern Tournament in Bangor, Maine representing Connecticut. Bangor will host the 10-team Senior League East Region tournament at Mansfield Stadium beginning Thursday. The winner of that double-elimination tournament, which continues through July 24, earns an automatic berth in the Senior League World Series which runs from July 27 through Aug. 3 in Easley, South Carolina. Along with Stamford, state champions from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland will be joined by the Maine District 3 champion in the East Region field. Stamford won the state championship 12-2 over Plainfield in a game held at Barnes Field in Bristol. The Thunder were 4-0 in the tournament. In the championship, Stamford scored seven times in the sixth inning to pull away. Stamford was led offensively by Steve Jackson, Mike Edwards and Cole Glazhofer, all of whom drove in runs. Tyler Restivo pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out eight for the win. Stamford banged out 14 hits in the game with Edwards, Will Garafalo and Rocky Cuscuna all picking up multiple hits.
