GameTimeCT Top 10 Girls Basketball Poll (Jan. 25): Calm before another SCC storm

Despite losses by two of the state's ranked teams, no one was penalized enough to make much of a dent in the latest GameTimeCT Top 10 Girls Basketball poll.

Hand lost to West Haven and Simsbury lost to Averill Park Central (NY), which is ranked No. 3 in New York state. Hand did fall slightly from No. 5 to No. 6, swapping places with Holy Cross. But Simsbury stayed firm at No. 8.

Unbeaten Hamden stayed No. 1 with unbeaten Ludlowe close behind and the rest of the Top 10 remained relatively static.

But there's a good chance for a shakeup next week with the SCC heavyweights squaring off against each other again.

Hamden plays host to rival Sacred Heart Academy on Friday, a rematch of the barnburner on Dec. 22 at the University of New Haven. Hamden won, 64-62, thanks to Gianna Robert's buzzer beater.

No. 3 Mercy also gets a rematch with Hand in a solid Thursday night undercard. Hand previously toppled the Tigers 53-50 on Jan. 4.

The new teams getting votes were all “new” with Newtown, New Canaan and New Milford entering the mix. Newtown made the biggest leap, going from no votes to 67 as it rides a 10-game winning streak.
