The GameTimeCT Boys Hockey Top 10 remains the GameTimeCT Boys Hockey Top 10. There have been no interlopers. The poll is a closed ecosystem. Figure that one out. This is the fifth time we've taken the poll since the start of the season going on a month and a half ago, and even as many teams reach or pass the midpoint of their regular season, the same 10 teams have made up the top 10 each time, led by Notre Dame-West Haven. Sure, the order has bounced around a bit. Fairfield jumped over third-place New Canaan into second after beating Darien this past week and Ridgefield the week before. That loss and a loss to Xavier contributed to Darien's drop from second to sixth. Xavier popped up a spot to fifth, as did Fairfield Prep to fourth. Those two teams meet Wednesday in Bridgeport. Ridgefield and Northwest Catholic remained seventh and eighth, though the gap between the Tigers and Lions dropped from 16 points to one. And after they met and tied early this past week, Greenwich and Hamden flip-flopped, with the Cardinals reclaiming the ninth spot after two weeks in 10th. The closest anyone has yet come to breaking up the Big 10 is Sheehan, which came within a point of Hamden when we got back to polling after the holidays. The Titans are one of three Division II teams also drawing votes this week, along with North Haven and Lyman Hall. Top 10 Boys Hockey Poll (Jan. 24) TEAM REC PTS LAST CLASS 1. ND-WEST HAVEN (10) 8-2-0 116 1 I Last Week: def. Bishop Hendricken (R.I.) 5-3; def. Ridgefield 5-1. This Week: Wednesday vs. Notre Dame-Fairfield (Bennett), 4 p.m.; Saturday at Bishop Fenwick (Mass.), 6 p.m. The Bottom Line:The Green Knights continue their tour of New England in Peabody, Mass., on Saturday. They enter the week on a seven-game winning streak. 2. FAIRFIELD (2) 9-0-0 103 4 I Last Week: def. Darien 6-4. This Week: Tuesday at Greenwich (Hamill), 4:30 p.m.; Wednesday vs. Cheshire (Wonderland), 8 p.m.; Saturday vs. Watertown/Pomperaug (Wonderland), 8 p.m. The Bottom Line: After its 7-0-1 start last year, the co-op got as high as No. 3 in the poll. So one more game unbeaten gets you one spot higher. See if they can continue that trend. 3. NEW CANAAN 6-2-3 93 3 I Last Week:tied Barrington, R.I., 2-2; def. Hamden 5-1; lost to La Salle Academy (R.I.) 5-1. This Week: Monday vs. Westhill/Stamford (Darien Ice), 8:10 p.m.; Saturday vs. Greenwich (Darien Ice), 5:50 p.m. The Bottom Line: Saturday’s loss in Rhode Island was New Canaan’s first in regulation. Funny enough, the Rams went to overtime five times in their first 10 games (1-1-3). 4. FAIRFIELD PREP 6-4-0 80 5 I Last Week: def. West Haven 7-2; def. Hamden 5-0. This Week: Wednesday vs. Xavier (Wonderland), 6 p.m. The Bottom Line: Score by periods over this three-game winning streak: Two in the first, seven in the second, 12 in the third. 5. XAVIER 8-3-0 75 6 I Last Week: def. Darien 6-5 (OT); def. St. Joseph 7-4. This Week: Wednesday at Fairfield Prep (Wonderland), 6 p.m. The Bottom Line: A few coaches really liked the Falcons’ makeup before the season. They may be hitting their stride now. A game in Smithfield, R.I., has been pushed back a couple of weeks. 6. DARIEN 6-4-1 65 2 I Last Week: lost to Xavier 6-5 (OT); lost to Fairfield 6-4; def. Ridgefield 1-0. This Week: Monday vs. St. Joseph (Darien Ice), 6 p.m.; Friday at Saint Joseph (Metuchen, N.J.), 6:45 p.m. The Bottom Line: Quite unfortunate that Saint Joseph of Montvale, N.J., has a game scheduled on Wednesday. (There are no CIAC finals on St. Joseph’s Day this year, if this also made you wonder.) 7. RIDGEFIELD 5-5-1 37 7 I Last Week: def. West Haven 3-2; lost to Notre Dame-West Haven 5-1; lost to Darien 1-0. This Week: Wednesday vs. Trumbull (Winter Garden), 8:30 p.m.; Saturday at St. Joseph (Rinks at Shelton), 5:30 p.m. The Bottom Line: The Tigers are 2-5-1 against Top 10 teams. After this week’s two games against teams from Trumbull, they’ll only have one game left (a postponed game against Immaculate) against teams outside the top 10. 8. NWC 5-2-2 36 8 I Last Week: Did not play. This Week: Wednesday at Farmington Valley (Avon Old Farms), 8 p.m.; Saturday vs. Hamden (ISCC), 7:50 p.m. The Bottom Line: Schedule quirks: Of the middle 11 games of the Lions’ schedule, eight are on the road. Four of the next six are away from the big rink in Simsbury, but their last four are home games. 9. GREENWICH 5-5-1 26 10 I Last Week: tied Hamden 2-2; def. Notre Dame-Fairfield 3-0; def. Trumbull 3-2. This Week: Tuesday vs. Fairfield (Hamill), 4:30 p.m.; Saturday at New Canaan (Darien Ice), 5:50 p.m. The Bottom Line: The next five, and seven of the last eight, for the Cardinals are against top-10 teams, so we should have a pretty good sense of how far they’ve come by mid-February. 10. HAMDEN 5-5-1 20 9 I Last Week: tied Greenwich 2-2; lost to New Canaan 4-1; lost to Fairfield Prep 5-0. This Week: Wednesday vs. Guilford, 8 p.m.; Saturday at Northwest Catholic (ISCC), 7:50 p.m. The Bottom Line: The schedule had let up just a little on the Green Dragons, and they took advantage to win four in a row. Well, it toughened up again this past week. But two of Hamden’s next four are against Division II teams... not that Guilford and North Haven are slouches. Also receiving votes: North Haven (8-2-0) 6; Lyman Hall (9-1-0) 2; Sheehan (9-1-0) 1.
