Keegan Hughes broke a 1-1 tie in the 80th minute as the seventh-ranked Stanford men’s team defeated No. 23 Virginia Tech 2-1 at home Sunday to win their third-round NCAA Tournament match.

The Cardinal (14-2-4) advance to face Clemson (18-2-1) on the road on Friday at 3 p.m. PST in a quarterfinal match. The second-seeded Tigers defeated Providence 2-1 in double overtime on Sunday.

The quarterfinal is a rematch of the 2015 College Cup Final, when Stanford won 4-0 for its first national title.

Hughes, a freshman, scored from the back post when the Hokies failed to clear Derek Waldeck’s corner kick.

Waldeck had put Stanford up 1-0 in the 54th minute when his left-footed drive inside the box went between a defender’s legs and beat goalkeeper Mathijs Swaneveld.

Virginia Tech (10-5-3) equalized in the 68th minute when Camron Lennon scored on a cross from Daniel Pereira.
