Chris Watts steps in for Montelli

Vito Montelli greeted Chris Watts one more time when the legendary St. Joseph High boys basketball coach announced that he was retiring as Cadet boys basketball coach after 50 years, and that Watts, a former Cadet player and current assistant coach would be the program’s new head coach at a press conference Wednesday at Vazzano’s Four Season’s Restaurant.

Watts remembers two life-altering meetings with Montelli.

“Michael Casey was a teammate on my Elks Pop Warner football team in Milford, and he said I should check out St. Joseph,” Watts said.

“The way it was set up, me and my mom Luwanda had to first meet with the athletic director, and that was Mr. Montelli.

Adult tennis tourney

The Milford Recreation Department is accepting registrations for the City of Milford Adult Tennis Tournament that starts on Saturday, Sept. 8.

Tournament Director Dave Kardas is offering N.T.R.P. play levels for singles, doubles, and mixed doubles with rankings of 2.5 to 5.0. Entrants may register for any two events in this round-robin event.

The men’s and women’s doubles will take place on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 11 a.m.

Adult tennis lessons

The Milford Recreation Department is accepting registrations for summer adult tennis lessons on a first-come first-serve basis at the Recreation office in the Parsons Complex.

The adult tennis lessons will be held at Eisenhower Park and Dave Kardas, USPTA, USPTR will again deliver his proven program to Milford for adults of all levels.

Beginner and advanced beginner adult sessions will be one-hour classes held twice a week for four weeks on Monday and Wednesday from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. or Tuesday and Thursday from 8:15 to 9:15 p.m.

Eastern Regional warriors

  The Milford International 9-10 softball team went 1-2 in the Eastern Regional Championships in Pennsylvania. The team will be recognized by the City of Milford for their accomplishments on Monday Sept. 10 at City Hall.
