Stephanie Lane performs in Midsummer Night's Dream

Milford’s Stephanie Lane is among performers in the Elm Shakespeare Company’s production of Midsummer Night’s Dream at Edgerton Park in New Haven.

Elm Shakespeare Company, in residence at Southern Connecticut State University, is celebrating its 21st anniversary season of Shakespeare in the Park with the current production, which has been taking place this summer and continues tonight through Aug.28; Aug. 30 and 31 and Sept. 1 to 4 at Edgerton Park, 75 Cliff Street, New Haven. All shows start at 8 p.m.

According to the Hartford Courant, admission is free, though donations are suggested and solicited. Edgerton Park is located on the New Haven/Hamden border along Whitney Avenue.

A Midsummer Night's Dream is a comedy written by William Shakespeare between 1590 and 1597, according to an online news source.

“It portrays the events surrounding the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta. These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set. The play is one of Shakespeare's most popular works for the stage and is widely performed across the world,” the site states.

Stephanie Jean Lane plays the role of Helena, according to the Elm Shakespeare Company’s website. This is Lane’s first season with Elm Shakespeare.

“She grew up in Milford and watched her dad, Colin Lane, perform in several seasons at Edgerton Park,” the site states.

Stephanie Lane is an actor, dancer, choreographer, writer and director, according to her website. A 2005 graduate of Jonathan Law High School, she earned an MFA from New York University, Tisch School for the Arts in the graduate acting program, and a BA from Barnard College at Columbia University.

The Milford Mirror interviewed Lane in 2011, when she performed in a Scotland festival.

“With Lane's pedigree — her father, Colin Lane, is a professional actor whose credits include the Irish Repertory Theater, American Repertory Theater and Berkshire Theatre Festival — it's not surprising that she is comfortable in front of the footlights,” wrote correspondent Karen Dydzuhn in the 2011 article.

Lane commented on her experience in Scotland then, saying, "Seeing that much theater forced me to get more specific about my own style and my own taste, about what, to me, makes a show really good. It made me clarify my ideas about what kind of theater I want to make, and what I want to be capable of as a performer."

She has performed in New York with Hole in the Sky, and in the greater New York area with the Jenny Rocha Dance Theater and for choreographer Ani Javian.

Her credits include the following:

Regional — The Guthrie Theater: Concrete Orange (Farm Girl). Berkshire Theatre Festival: Around the World in Eighty Days (multi-part Ensemble). NYC – NYU Grad Acting: Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike (Nina), Caucasian Chalk Circle (Natella), Playboy of the West Indies (Peggy), After the Fall (Maggie). La MaMa: Lighthouse Triptych (Mrs. Ramsay), Mandorla (Dancer).

International — Edinburgh International Fringe Festival: Dr. Apple’s Last Lecture (Lemon). Dancer: Jenny Rocha & Her Painted Ladies.
