Annual Folks on Spokes Sunday raises money for Bridges
Hundreds of cyclists, runners and walkers will descend on Fowler Field in Milford Sunday, Sept. 18 for the annual Folks on Spokes - Folks on Foot Ride, Run, Walk for Mental Health to benefit Bridges…A Community Support System.
Proceeds will go directly to help local people who need psychiatric, behavioral health, substance abuse and primary care services.
“Folks on Spokes is a community tradition, started over two decades ago to raise awareness and support for community-based mental health services,” said Rachel Merva, event chairperson.
Prizes will be awarded to top fundraisers.
The non-competitive bicycle tour allows riders to choose routes of 5, 10, 20, 40, 50 or 66 miles. The scenic shoreline routes are marked with the familiar blue and white FOS road signs and include several rest stops with water, fruit and energy bars, donated by Whole Foods of Milford.
Tony’s Bikes & Sports will be on hand to help cyclists with repairs.
The 5K run and walk, sponsored by Subway Restaurants, follows a route from Fowler Field to Fort Trumbull Beach and back. Prizes will be awarded for the top finisher in each age category, 12 and up.
Registration and check-in begins at 7:30 a.m., with staggered start times throughout the morning for the rides and 5K.
“Bridges relies on proceeds from this event to help cover the cost of providing services to thousands of low-income individuals and families in our area,” said Barbara DiMauro, Bridges’ president and CEO. “We are very grateful for the continued support of so many businesses, organizations and the generous people who help make Folks on Spokes-Folks on Foot a success each year.”
Subway Restaurants will provide the lunch sandwiches this year. Other major sponsors to date are The Milford Bank, The Devon Rotary Club, Rose & Kiernan, Inc., and Genoa Healthcare.
Registration includes a commemorative t-shirt for all pre-registered participants, also available on the day of the event while supplies last.
Volunteers are needed for registration, t-shirt and lunch tables, rest stops, set-up and clean-up.
Registration fees are $40 for adult cyclists and $30 for 5K runners or walkers. Children under 12 accompanied by an adult are $10 for both events. Day of event registration fees are $45 and $35 for adults. Online registration can be found at http://folksonspokes.bridgesct.org.
