A sweet holiday treat to keep or give

"It's the most wonderful time of the year, there'll be much mistletoe-ing, and hearts will be glowing, when loved ones are near." Somehow the holidays have crept up behind us again and we must get right to the planning stages for our meals as well as the gift giving and ones we need to buy. If you just take the time to think and plan ahead it can be easier getting this all done on time.

Judy, and I sit down and plan each and every part of the many holiday meals beginning with the appetizers right down to the decadent desserts. And don't forget the homemade food gifts that we love to share with our friends and family.

The recipe we are sharing with you today is perfect for your holiday table but also makes the perfect gift. This recipe was given to me many years ago and everyone that tastes them cannot believe the flavor. The aroma that fills the house is decadently intoxicating. Be careful — these sugared nuts are addicting, so be ready to make more than one batch!

Sugared Nuts

1 lb nuts of choice — pecans, walnuts

1 cup vanilla sugar*

2 egg whites

1 stick butter

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 300º. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. In a small pan melt the butter and add the vanilla. In a mixing bowl, beat the whites. Gently add the sugar until the whites are stiff and shiny from adding the sugar. Add in the nuts and mix gently until coated. Spread the nut mixture in a layer onto the cookie sheet. Now pour the melted butter mixture all over the nuts. Bake for 35-40 minutes depending on your oven, all oven temperatures are slightly different. Don't burn them!!!

*Vanilla Sugar  (Twins’ favorite sugar): Mix 2 cups white sugar and 1-2 split vanilla beans. Gently push the beans into the sugar. Store in an airtight container. Swirl the jar for a few days so the vanilla beans can perfume the sugar...it is amazing!
