Girls tennis: Foran Lions enjoy successful campaign

The Foran High girls tennis team defeated New Fairfield before losing to RHAM from Hebron in the Class M state tournament. Coach Missy Kaminski’s fifth-seeded Lions defeated 12th-seeded Rebels, 4-3, in the first round.

“We ended the regular season 16-4,” Kaminski said. “The win over New Fairfield was unbelievable. It took more than four hours to complete. To say this season has been incredible would be an understatement.

“Words cannot even begin to describe how proud I am of this group of athletes. Making it to the quarterfinals for the Class M state tournament was a huge accomplishment.”

Julia Harrington and Arshi Puri were seniors and played doubles for the Lions in the win over New Fairfield.

Grace Hiza, Kyra Johnson, Sarah Lockwood and Eleanor Noyes were top singles players, as Foran also qualified for the SCC tournament.

Izzy Connelly, Natalie Hubler, Meghan Stokes, Zoe Eichner, Clea O’Neil teamed up for doubles competition at the state level.

Kaminski believes more success is in the offing with juniors Hiza, Stokes, Hubler and Connelly returning. Sophomores back will be Lockwood, Eichner, O’Neil, Vaishnavi Bulusu and Alyssa Hill, along with freshmen Johnson, Noyes, Kaitlyn Dalby, Misai Lam and Deyvn Weed. Seniors Rebecca Carey and Kulnoor Saini and freshman Mia Nittoly were team managers.

Foran-RHAM

In the quarterfinals, No. 4 RHAM won a 5-2 decision. They went on to defeat No. 9 Farmington (4-3) before losing to No. 6 Joel Barlow (4-3) in the title match.
