Girls track: Lady Lawmen excel in 2017

The Jonathan Law girls track and field team finished its dual-meet season with a 13-1 record.

Coach Linwood Schulte’s Lady Lawmen won their third consecutive Hammonasset Division title in the Southern Connecticut Conference.

Law placed fourth in the Class M meet and were 15th at the State Open.

The highlight in Class MM was a first place showing by Shawna Winters in the discus with a personal best throw of 112-3.

The 4×100 relay team of Olivia Steiner, Rhea Grant, Holly Caldwell and Kiara Smith placed second in Class MM with a time of 49.94. They were unbeaten in the regular season.

Smith finished second in the 100-meter dash at 12.63 and was runner-up in the long jump with a personal best and a school record jump of 17-9.

Steiner placed fourth in the long jump, an event she won the previous year.

Grant picked up additional team points with a seventh in the 200-meter dash.

Melanie Coleman finished fifth in the long jump.

Keala Hoff gained an eighth-place finish in the event.

Smith went on finish second in the State Open in long jump for All State designation and a fifth at New Englands to gain All New England status.

Other accomplishments during her career at Law, in addition to her long jump record, include a school record of 12.28 in the 100 meters and Smith was a member of the 4X100 team that set a school record of 49.48 last year and competed in the Nationals.
