The Milford Fire Department is expecting to add five new firefighters to its staff this year.

“We have 114 fire personnel on staff, and expect to send five new recruits to the Connecticut Fire Academy in late August,” said Battalion Chief Anthony Fabrizi.

There are currently four vacancies due to recent retirements, and one pending retirement in June or July.

The department will begin accepting applications for entry level firefighter on April 1. The deadline to return the application is April 15 by noon.

To become a Milford firefighter, applicants must pass a physical examination, written exam, survival swim and fitness test.

“When a man becomes a fireman his greatest act of bravery has been accomplished,” the city’s fire department website states, quoting the late New York Fire Chief Edward F. Croker. “What he does after that is all in the line of work.”

Application packets can be downloaded at: http://www.ci.milford.ct.us/fire-department/pages/employment or picked up and dropped off at: Milford Fire Headquarters, 72 New Haven Ave., Milford, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

“We typically receive approximately 300 applications to take the written exam,” Fabrizi said. “On average, approximately 100 advance to the physical agility portion of the testing process. The agility test narrows the pool down to approximately 70 potential candidates.”

The oral interview process is the final phase of the test, and will yield approximately 30 to 45 candidates for the eligibility list. That list remains effective for two years.

The Milford Fire Department consists of four active fire stations, a vehicle and apparatus repair facility, maintenance shop, and a “special services unit” building. The department also received, in 2013, use of a decommissioned Army repair facility.

Last year, The Connecticut Committee for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve honored the Milford Fire Department with the Secretary of Defense’s Freedom Award. The Milford Fire Department was among those honored for making it easier for local firefighters to serve their country.

Last year the Milford Fire Department also hired its first female professional firefighter.
