Anthony Alicki named HCBL baseball MVP

Each and every time Shelter Island gave the ball to righthander Anthony Alicki (University of Bridgeport), he delivered, from Opening Day in Sag Harbor to the Hampton’s Collegiate Baseball League’s semifinal clincher against Montauk.

With a stellar 7-0 record during the regular season, tying the record set by two other pitchers in the HCBL’s eight-year history, Alicki garnered the league’s Pitcher of the Year award, as voted on by its seven head coaches.

Alicki earned three of seven first-place votes, and appeared in the top three on all coaches’ ballots, the only player with that distinction.

He was followed in the voting by Westhampton’s Michael Toner (William & Mary), who  finished second, and a pair of North Fork righthanders — Frank Moscatiello (St. Thomas Aquinas) and Danny Pobereyko (Butler).

The Bucks went 10-0 in Alicki’s starts in 2015, including game three of the HCBL semifinals in which Alicki gave up one run over six innings while striking out a season-high seven in what was a must-win game for Shelter Island.

He defeatet five of six league opponents — he never faced Southampton — and surrendered three or fewer runs in all 10 starts.

In addition to his win total, which tied Nick Tropeano (Riverhead ’09) and Paul Paez (Southampton ’12) for the league record, Alicki finished fifth in the league in strikeouts (42).

He was selected to start July’s HCBL All-Star Game, where he pitched a perfect inning.

Alicki came to Shelter Island off of a spring in which he led Bridgeport in innings (71 2/3), wins (6) and strikeouts (76) while ranking third in ERA (2.51).

For his efforts, he was named second team All-East Coast Conference.

The Milford native spent the prior spring with Western Oklahoma State College, a two-year program based in Altus.
