Girls basketball: Next player up provides win for Law

There are team wins, where contributions come from many players.

Then there is the effort put forth by Jonathan Law when the Lady Lawmen defeated Sheehan of Wallingford, 53-48, in the James L. Richetelli Sr. Gymnasium in Milford on Wednesday night.

Down two starters because of injury/illness, coach Dan Young’s Lady Lawmen fell victim to a 13-0 run by the Titans that carried from the first and into the second quarter.

Law had played Bassick High to a two-point win only 24 hours earlier, and the locals looked tired and close to giving up the ghost in this SCC showdown.

Liv Kowalski’s 3-pointer, and a better job on the defensive boards, gave the Devonites a second wind.

That’s when Fallon Andriolas stepped up big time.

“Without two of our best ballhandlers (Samara Thacker and Pam Ellison), and a clutch scorer (Thacker), I had to take on more of a scoring responsibility,” said Andriolas, who scored 12 points in the final 2:12 of the first half to lift Law into a 30-27 lead at the half.

“I couldn’t stay behind the line (and spot up for three-point shots), I had to drive to the basket,” said the senior. “What I like most about this team is that everyone is playing the game for each other. There are no grades…No freshman, sophomores, juniors or seniors…Everyone is in it together.”

Sheehan used its high-post offense to regain the lead in a second half that saw two ties and a pair of lead changes. Liv Robles (20 points) was the centerpiece for the Titans, as she looked to post up, take lob passes, or score off rebounds from the block. Her bucket put Sheehan in front 39-37 with 6:22 remaining.

“We received just a great performance from our entire team,” Young said. “ We had to adapt because of missing parts of our game and the girls hung in there. It was a combination of Fallon and Cali Jolley and their senior leadership, Shelby Green a freshman and Maddie Lula a sophomore coming off the bench, and Liz (Kowalski), Jillian (Hall) and Katie (Konareski) giving us a huge lift.”

Konareski’s jump shot from the elbow tied the game for the third time at 39-all.

Kowalski’s steal led to a Konareski free throw. The sophomore missed the second, but here is where the floor tilted toward the Lady Lawmen.

Hall not once but twice fought for the carom before she gained control. Bracketed by two defenders, she got the ball to Kowalski on the opposite block for a layup and a 42-39 lead.

Kowalski then doubled the ball on the sideline near midcourt and came away with a turnover. She fed Konareski, who scored in traffic in transition and was fouled.

Her free throw gave Law a 45-39 lead and ran Sheehan into a timeout with 4:34 on the clock.

Everything looked hunky-dory for Law after Jolley converted two free throws to complete a 15-5 run. They had a seven-point lead and the next Sheehan foul would send them to the foul line.

Not so fast.

Madison Larkin hit a three-pointer, then used her size advantage at the top of the defense to force back-to-back turnovers in the backcourt. Her freebie, and a pair by Robles, brought the Titans within 49-46 with a minute to go.

Hall made a free throw after Law broke the press, but Robles scored down low and it was 50-48.

Coming out of a timeout, Law had three things to do — get the ball inbounds, make free throws, and get back on defense and play defense.

The Lady Lawmen checked all three boxes.

Kowalski inbounded the ball to Andriolas, took a return pass and was fouled.

She connected on a free throw to make it a three-point game.

Sheehan went to Robles once more, but Hall forced a short shot and grabbed the rebound with 14.8 remaining.

Hall swished home her second attempt for a four-point lead, Law forced a jump ball to regain possession, and Jolley closed out the victory with a free throw.
