It costs $10,000 to $15,000 to run the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which is scheduled for Saturday, March 10, starting at 1 p.m. in downtown Milford.
Thousands of residents and nonresidents pack the downtown area for the annual event, which is probably one of the city’s most well-attended celebrations, next to the Milford Oyster Festival.
Residents who enjoy the annual parade, which usually lasts more than an hour and wends its way from the Parsons Complex to the gazebo on the Milford Green, may want to consider attending one of the pre-parade fund-raisers. Not only do they help support the popular event, but the pre-events are fun — run by and filled with some of the same people found at the big parade.
The key events are the annual Miss Emerald Isle and grand marshal dinners, and the pre-parade breakfast at the Masonic hall downtown.
The dinner for Miss Emerald Isle Julia Anne Green and Grand Marshal Linda Gilbert is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 26, starting at 6 p.m. at Aldario’s Restaurant on Naugatuck Avenue. This is a sit-down dinner, and the choice of food is chicken francaise, stuffed sole, or eggplant Parmesan, with a cash bar. Music will be provided by Bobby Morrill. Tickets are $40, $15 for children 12 and under.
This is the first year that the Miss Emerald Isle and grand marshal dinners are being combined. In past years, the events were held separately. The combined dinner will mean double the fun. It’s a great opportunity to meet both of the people chosen to lead the annual parade, as well as their families and supporters.
Past Miss Emerald Isles and grand marshals can usually be found at the annual dinner, so attendance can mean reliving past year’s parades.
A big pancake breakfast is scheduled for Sunday, March 4, from 8 to 1 at the Masonic Hall next to Milford Bank on Broad Street. Attendees will have a choice of pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, coffee, tea, pastry, and juices. The cost is $7, and committee members will be on hand, preparing and serving the food and mingling with the guests.
This is the 22nd year for the Milford St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The parade has grown over the years, and some estimates put attendance at 20,000 people.
Each year the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee works tirelessly and quietly behind the scenes to raise the money to pay for the bands, buses, insurance, and other expenses that go into putting the parade together.
Committee members don’t complain about the task but go about it with determination and pleasure. They would no doubt welcome more company at their annual fund-raisers. More people and a little more parade money will make their pre-parade days more enjoyable.
