Understanding food allergies

Nine-year-old Geno Salvatore has several food allergies, including his life-threatening allergies to peanuts and shellfish.

His parents learned Geno had allergies when he was 18 months old, and like many families, they learned the hard way. They watched him suffer a serious reaction to a food product.

Denise Morris Curt will not be hosting her annual Mother’s Day weekend Meet the Artists and Artisans show on the Milford green this weekend, ending a long-standing tradition in Milford.

However, another group has stepped forward to run an arts and crafts fair on the green Saturday and Sunday. It is East Coast Craft Shows, which has traditionally run events on Cape Cod.

The city of Milford will begin its 2012 Bulk Waste Pickup Program on May 2, offering residents a chance to get rid of unwanted household items.

While the program is a blessing for many city residents, it is a thorn in the side for others who think bulk pickup season makes the city look a bit messy. Some residents object to piles of unwanted furniture, toys, record albums, and other household items littering the front yards of Milford homes.

   

Drug drop-off could save lives

Not everyone may realize the importance of keeping prescription drugs out of the hands of children and teenagers. With today’s high rate of drug use, however, it is very important.

The Milford Police Department will collect unwanted prescription drugs Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Milford Senior Center, and residents with unused prescriptions are encouraged to drop them off.

   

Trout derby would be a shame to lose

A long-standing Milford tradition stands to come to an end unless a local business or residents dig into their pockets to keep it going. These days there are so many causes, but this is a very Milford cause — it is the annual Milford Children’s Trout Derby.
