Milford Progress explains downtown plan of development: Presentation planned Feb. 29

The following questions and answers on the city's Plan of Development and Milford Progress' input into the downtown portion was provided by Milford Progress.

 

What is the downtown plan of development?

The Downtown Plan of Development is a process for visioning and planning that is being undertaken to specifically look at potential plans for the downtown. After it is updated and approved it will be rolled into the city wide Comprehensive Plan of Development that is required every 10 years by the State of Connecticut.

How does the plan of development work?

Milford Progress, Inc. working with the Planning & Zoning Department retained Yale Urban Design Workshop under the direction of Alan Plattus, Professor of Architecture & Urbanism, to develop the plan for downtown district. It will be completed in three phases.

Phase I involves the review of past and current plans, documentation, analysis of existing conditions and needs, interviews and meetings with stakeholders. A comprehensive review of all relevant public and private plans for the downtown area, analyzing and documenting existing conditions including changes since the last Downtown Plan analyzing needs and goals and conducting meetings and interviews to engage and debrief stakeholders including property owners, business people, public officials and citizens. Multiple interviews and meetings have been completed.

Phase II involves the development of preliminary recommendations for key issues and preliminary designs for significant elements and sites. The Yale Urban Design Workshop will propose and discuss alternative scenarios and recommendation for future downtown development including traffic and parking streetscapes and signage, open space, design guidelines and alternatives for key elements sites and buildings in the downtown area.

Phase III involves the development and presentation of Final Design Proposals and preparing a report including graphics illustrating plan concept and components, executive summary and phasing proposals.

A meeting is scheduled at the Milford Library for presentation on Wednesday, February 29th at 7:00 p.m.

 

Who is involved in the plan?

Who is Milford Progress, Inc.?

Milford Progress, Inc., is the official downtown economic development agency endorsed by the Board of Aldermen. There are 21 members who sit on the Board of Directors of Milford Progress, Inc.

 

Who approves and works on the Comprehensive Plan of Development? The Planning & Zoning Commission is the agency that oversees the Comprehensive Plan of Development.

Have there been any decisions made on the Downtown Plan at this point? Absolutely not. There have been focus groups, fact finding meetings, input from individuals, interviews, but nothing has been presented or approved at this point. Yale is currently still gathering information and would welcome your comments.
