A bobcat photographed in the northern section of Milford yesterday is the first documented sighting of a bobcat in Milford, but there have been reports the animals have been spotted in the area for years, said Animal Control Officer Rick George.
Pam Rasmidatta took the photograph of the bobcat in her neighbor's backyard Tuesday at about 1:15 p.m. as it was walking through the yard.
George said the photo was taken in the Herbert Street area.
“Bobcats are one of those reclusive type animals,” George said. “For the most part, they're supposed to be nocturnal. But any nocturnal animal can be out during the day.”
From the photo, George said it looks like the animal is healthy.
He noted that he's gotten calls for years from people saying they spotted footprints or glimpses of bobcats.
Homeowners simply need to take common sense precautions, such as trying to keep small cats and other small pets indoors or in safe secure areas. They should also secure garbage cans and not leave pet food outside.
“Right now we're seeing a big jump in wildlife in Milford,” George said. “The deer population is up; we have coyotes and possibly even wolf mixes. Because of the urbanization of everyplace, animals are being pushed and squeezed and they're spreading out.”
