Milford police investigating distraction-style theft

Milford police are investigating a distraction-style larceny at Suremart on Bridgeport Avenue.

The larceny reportedly took place June 16.

Police said an investigation revealed that two men entered the store, and one of them asked the employee for $20 worth of scratch off lottery tickets. The man then paid the employee only $8 and left the store as the other man remained inside the store.

The employee followed the first outside and got the remainder of the money due for the lottery tickets.

The second man then left the store, police said.

The employee checked when he was back inside the store and found that an undisclosed amount of money was taken from the business.

The suspects are described as two Hispanic middle aged men, one light skinned and the other dark skinned.

In January the department investigated a similar incident at the Corner Convenience Store at 58 River Street. Investigators believe that the suspects are using cell phones during these incidents.

Police are reminding business owners and employees to be aware of suspicious people inside their store who may be watching their business habits.

“Avoid giving merchandise to the customer until the correct amount of money is received,” said police spokesman Jeff Nielsen. “Monitor unsecure areas of the store and do not leave cash registers unattended. Report any unusual or suspicious activity to your local police department.”

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Detective Jeff Cortes at (203) 783-4731 or visit milfordpd.org and click on “Crime Tips.”
