Jonathan Law senior guard Kim Legen led the Eagles with 26 points in a 56-38 victory over Lyman Hal in Wallingford on Thursday. “Am I happy with how they played? No, but we got the win and finishing the season with six road games is tough,” Law coach Heather Borges said.
“We have more game. I want to finish 10-10.”
Asked and answered, as the Eagles defeated North Haven 58-43 on Monday and will take the No. 9 seed into its first-round SCC playoff game at No. 8 Sheehan High in Wallingford tonight at 6:30.
Junior Sam Murphy contributed 10 points and senior Nyasia Ramos added seven in the win over Lyman Hall.
Nicole Mierzejewski led the Trojans with 15 while freshman Hayley Hergott added 12 points on four 3-pointers.
“I feel like if you’re 10-10, then you get a roll of the dice for a home game [in the state tournament,” Borges said.
“It would be pretty amazing for those six seniors to have a home game.”
Law and Lyman Hall started off trading baskets. Murphy started the game with a layup and Legen nailed a three to lead 5-2, before Merzejewski responded to make it 5-4.
The game was tied at 12 after one period.
“Kim is a basketball player,” Borges said. “When she’s not at practice, she’s at the gym lifting, or she’s watching Duke on tape. She is a basketball junkie. You don’t get those all the time.
“She, since she was a freshman has lived in the gym. When we got her, she wasn’t our best player but by the end of her sophomore year, she was.”
After Taylor Mierzejewski hit a deep two-pointer, Law went on a 5-0 run on three points from Murphy and two free throws from Catie Miller.
Hergott then broke up the run with a three before Law rolled 9-2 to finish the half leading 27-19.
Murphy started the streak with a layup and a foul shot, before Legen scored six straight points to close out stanza.
Nicole Mierzejewski started the second half with a postup in the paint, to which Legen answered with a long two.
Law responded with a 5-0 run, started with a reverse layup from Phoebe French, a foul shot from Ramos and then a French steal and layup to help Law finish the third leading 37-26.
Hergott started the fourth nailing another three and then Mierzejewski finished at the rim with a layup to cut the lead to 38-31.
Legen answered with a 6-0 run of her own on two layups and two free throws.
Mierzejewski interrupted Legen with a layup, before Law streaked to the victory on a 13-4 run, shooting 11-of-14 from the free-throw line to finish the game victorious.
“They’re a team, and there are nights that Kim hasn’t dropped 20 and we’ve still won because the rest of the kids stepped up,” Borges said.
“They’re like a family. You don’t mess with them because you mess with one of them, they’re all coming after you.
“That’s how they are. They take care of each other. I’m lucky to have six girls that have been on varsity since they were freshmen.”
