Led by a second-place finish from Brian Manes at 120 pounds, the Jonathan Law wrestling team placed ninth at the SCC Championships at Daniel Hand High in Madison on Sunday. Manes fell to Will Crisco of Hand in 3:59 of their championship bout, while Soukhith Khamhoung dropped a 9-7 decision to Joe Roberts of Fairfield Prep to take fourth at 160 to round out the top finishers for coach Matt Schoonmaker’s Lawmen.
Xavier High of Middletown won the team championship for the second year in a row by scoring 203.5 points and Hand was second with 192 points. Shelton (94.5), Foran High (73) and Prep (63.5) rounded out the top five.
Law will compete in the Class M Championships at Windham High on Friday beginning at 4:30 p.m. and continuing on Saturday at 9:15 a.m.
Prior to the SCC tournament, Law closed out its regular-season schedule with a 50-24 setback to Shelton High on Senior Night at the James Richetelli Sr. Gymnasium on Feb. 8.
Law scored two straight wins, after Shelton’s Will DiMeo won a major decision over junior Kyle Frawley at 195 pounds to start the match.
Jake Mastrianna, one of Law’s seven seniors, took a 2-0 advantage over Shelton’s Alex Merdinger with a second-period takedown, before gaining the fall in 2:45.
James Marron followed with a pin over Shelton’s Geoff Russo in 1:08, staking Law to a 12-4 edge.
Shelton’s SCC champion Mark Failla wasted little time cutting into Gael deficit, pinning Tim Rebentisch in 31 seconds.
Shelton’s Scott Plucienik locked horns with Law junior Samantha Rebentisch at 113, opening up a 7-2 margin before recording the fall in 3:21.
After Samantha Rebentisch opened the bout with a takedown, Plucienik used a reversal to tie it at 2. Using a cradle to net a three-point nearfall, Plucienik grabbed a 5-2 edge heading into the second period.
Starting off on the bottom in the second stanza, Plucienik used another reversal to gain control, before pinning with 39 seconds left in the period.
Manes opened up a 2-1 lead over Connor McGinnis in their matchup at 120.
The senior then hit a reversal after deferring to start the second period, then worked his way up to gain the fall in 3:48.
That gave Law its final lead of the night, 18-16, as SCC champion Sean Kellett put Shelton ahead for good with a 15-4 win over Ryan Bannon.
Kellett had three takedowns, three nearfalls and a reversal to turn back Bannon.
At 132, the Gaels’ Mike Chernesky clipped Evan Delorio on the strength of a first-period takedown. The duo battled each other over the next two frames, with Delorio escaping with 10 seconds left in the second period.
But, Chernesky’s escape in the third period provided the final margin of victory, as Shelton increased its overall lead to 23-18.
Ed Hunt, a third SCC champion for Shelton, then pinned Garyd Boyd in 1:29, and Joe Wardell notched the fall over Chris Krouch in 3:09, as the Gaels’ advantage ballooned to 35-18.
Nick Pogacsas beat Law’s Cody Edson in the best bout of the night at 152, as the sophomore used his leg ride extensively in a 6-5 victory.
In the first period, Pogacsas used a takedown and back-to-back two-point nearfalls to open up a 6-0 lead.
Edson, a senior, battled back with a reversal and a two-point nearfall in the second period to pull within 6-4 heading into the third period.
An illegal hold on Pogacsas made it 6-5, but he was able to hold off Edson down the stretch to secure the win.
Liam Cummings and Mac Thompson then sandwiched respective pins of Soukhith Khamhoung and Jack Shuckerow around a forfeit victory awarded to Law’s Anthony Volturno to close out the bout.
