Griswold paces Lions in debut (SCC track)

Patty Doheny and Shannon Worcester aren’t exactly new faces around the local high school track scene. But each put in her initial appearance leading Foran High’s indoor track team at the Southern Connecticut Conference championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Friday.

Doheny and Worcester, both former runners at Foran, are the new coaches of the school’s first indoor track team.

Both Foran and Law added the sport this year and became the last schools in the SCC to have the sport.

“We’re really excited about this,” Doheny said. “Shannon and I both competed at the school, so it’s really fun to come back and coach here.

“We only have nine students on both teams. They all competed as individuals. We’re not up to team strength just yet.”

The Lions’ top performance was turned in by sophomore Nick Griswold, who finished third by clearing 5-8 in the high jump.

He placed behind winner Jake Scinto (Cheshire) and runner-up Patrick Donohue (Daniel Hand-Madison). Each jumped 6-2, but Scinto had the fewer misses.

Like many of the Foran competitors, Griswold is relatively new to jumping.

“Both of my parents [Beth and Dave] were jumpers,” Griswold said. “So, it seemed natural that I would take to the sport.

“Today wasn’t my best day, but I’m happy with my results overall and look to the [talent] of the two guys who finished ahead of me.”

Griswold comes from an athletic family. His older sisters, Khrysty and Steph, both played sports at Foran.

Competing for Foran on the girls team were Caitlin Eccleston, who was 10th in the 55-meter hurdles (10.11) and ninth in the long jump; Maggie Meyers, who was ninth in the pole vault (7-0), and Maggie Berkovich, whocleared 4-4 in the high jump.

On the boys side, Mark Dillman was 11th in the 1,000-meter run, where he was timed in 2:52.04.

Zach Sabo was 20th in 3:12.88 in the 1,000.

Shot putters Ed Drapp and Andrew Melendez were 20th and 21st, respectively.

Drapp threw a best of 32 feet. Melendez farthest toss reached 30 feet, nine inches.

“It will take some time for us to improve,” Doheny. “But the enthusiasm is there already. Both for the coaches and the kids.”
