Lower weights carry Lions

The Foran High wrestling team defeated East Haven, 47-25, on Wednesday night.

Coach Frank Peters’ Lions scored five straight wins in the lower weight classes.

 

Sophomore Liam Callahan and junior Rodrigo Sapriza received forfeits at 103 and 120 pounds, respectively, junior Jesus Ortiz won by 45-second fall at 132, junior C.J. Luth earned a 15-0 technical fall at 126, and sophomore Jake Pouliot scored a 10-7 decision at 113 pounds.

Junior Luke Stojanowski lost a 5-3 decision to Dom DellaCamera at 138, before junior Clay Callahan pinned Mike Misdach in 48 seconds of their 145-pound match.

Sophomore Beau Garcia (1:10) and freshman Piotr Stojanowski (26 seconds) lost by fall, but sophomore Zach Hubler got points back with a 7-0 win at 170 pounds.

Senior Mark Steeves pinned Kevin Hemminger in 45 seconds at 182, and junior Vinny Piselli lost 15-5 at 195.

Senior Peter Bassine earned a first-period fall in 1:29 at 220, before junior Chris Kyek lost by fall in the heavyweight division.

Foran split four matches at the Farmington Duals, defeating Wilton 45-33 and Northwestern 75-6, while losing to Fairfield Ludlowe 48-28 and Greenwich 42-39, on Saturday.

The match with Greenwich was a hotly-contested match dominated by pins.

Liam Callahan (1:06), Luth (12 seconds), Clay Callahan (3:43 pin), and Bassine (52 seconds) had falls for Foran, while Sapriza won a 4-0 decision and Ortiz and junior Kyle Carreiro (138) were awarded forfeits.

Luth put the first points on the board for the Lions with a 10-7 decision at 126 pounds versus Ludlowe.

Ortiz made it 9-0 when the 132-pound junior scored a pin in 2:57.

The Falcons took the next bout by fall, before Clay Callahan scored a 7-0 decision in his 145-pound bout.

Huebler (14-1 major decision), Bassine (1:24 pin) and Sapriza (48-second pin) accounted for the rest of the points.

Against Wilton, Sapriza (3:11 pin), Clay Callahan (6-0 decision), Huebler (3:36 pin), Steeves (17-second pin), sophomore Ben Croll (19-second pin at 195 pounds) and Bassine (1:13 pin) won points on the mat, and Liam Callahan was awarded a forfeit.

Sapriza (2-1 decision) and Pouliot (38-second pin) were winners on the mat versus Northwestern.
