The United Way of Milford will kick off its 2013-14 Campaign on Thursday, Sept. 26, with a reception at Subway World Headquarters, 325 Bic Drive, in Milford.

Bobby Valentine, former professional baseball player and manager and athletic director at Sacred Heart University, will be the guest speaker.

Valentine, a Stamford native, excelled as a high school baseball and football player before attending the University of Southern California.

His 10 years as a MLB player included successful stints with the Dodgers, Angels, Padres, Mets and Mariners. After retiring from baseball as a player, Valentine opened seven restaurants, worked in television for ESPN and NBC, and coached in minor and major leagues.

He served as manager for several teams including the Texas Rangers and the New York Mets, leading that team to the World Series in 2000.

Gary Johnson, president of the United Way of Milford, said, “We are thrilled to have Bobby Valentine with us as we kick off our 2013-14 Campaign. Not only is he a local sports legend, but his philanthropic efforts in Connecticut and beyond make him the perfect spokesman for what the United Way is all about. We are also grateful to our friends at Subway for hosting this exciting event. ”

The United Way of Milford supports 22 local non-profit agencies, including the Boys and Girls Club, the Woodruff Family YMCA, The Milford Senior Center, the Rape Crisis Center, and more.

The campaign kickoff will be Sept. 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets to the reception are $10 and include hot and cold appetizers, dessert and beverages.
