To the Editor:
On behalf of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network Connecticut Affiliate, I am extremely pleased to extend a heartfelt thank you to Senators Richard Blumenthal and Joseph Lieberman, as well as Representatives Joe Courtney, Rosa DeLauro, Jim Himes, John Larson and Chris Murphy for co-sponsoring the Pancreatic Cancer Research and Education Act (S.362/H.R.733).
This bill calls on the National Cancer Institute to develop a long-term and comprehensive strategic plan for pancreatic cancer research.
The leadership by Connecticut’s elected officials on this issue gives us hope that we will soon pass legislation that will give researchers and scientists the tools they need to make true progress on this disease.
Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States, and remains the only cancer that still has a five-year survival rate in the single digits, at just six percent.
In 2012 alone, it will claim the lives of approximately 510 people in Connecticut.
Contact your elected officials to thank them for supporting a cause that affects their constituents and ask them to encourage their colleagues in the House and Senate to join them in co-sponsoring the Pancreatic Cancer Research and Education Act.
Join us in Washington, DC in June to advocate for increased research for this devastating disease and to tell your members of Congress and their staff how important pancreatic cancer research funding is to you. For more information, visit www.pancan.org/AD2012.
