Editor’s Note: The Milford Garden Club will host a flower show Sept. 22 at the Milford Historical Society. Following is a profile of the local club, its mission and organization.
How long has the Milford Garden Club existed?
The club is starting its 86th year.
How many members are there?
There are 45 active, 25 supporting members.
How often does the club meet?
The club meets the second Tuesday of every month except for July and August.
Where does the club meet?
The club meets at the DAR building on Prospect Street.
Are there dues to pay?
Dues are $35 per year.
What are some annual events the club takes part in?
The Milford Garden Club supports the community through many beautification projects. Members recently replanted and continue to maintain the garden in front of the Milford Library and they also maintain the Milford Historical Society gardens on High Street.
At Christmas the club makes wreaths for municipal buildings in town: The American Red Cross, the DAR, Bridges, Milford Library and the Beth El Shelter buildings all have the club’s beautiful wreaths hanging on their doors during the holidays.
Members also have established a scholarship program for students who show an interest in environmental and conservation studies.
The club exhibits its own horticulture and floral designs at the annual Connecticut Flower and Garden Show in Hartford.
What is the key reason the club exists?
The club exists to promote a deeper respect and love for this Earth, shared joy in the wonders of gardening and the fun of camaraderie. The club also teaches environmental awareness and conservation, gardening, floral design and horticulture. Special speakers are scheduled at eight meetings per year to share their expertise in their field.
Does the club hold any major fund-raisers?
The May Market is a major fund-raiser, where the club sells flowers, vegetables and herbs. Master gardeners are available to answer gardener’s questions. There is a “Green” table that shares ways to conserve and recycle, plus information on raised bed gardening.

Milford’s club is affiliated with the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, National Garden Clubs of America.
Who is the Milford Garden Club president?

What will be featured at the upcoming flower show, and when and where is it?
The upcoming show will be held at the Milford Historical Society, 34 High Street, from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 22. This is a small standard flower show. There will be horticulture, floral designs and special exhibits. Original watercolor artwork by an award winning artist/member of the club will be exhibited for silent auction the day of the show.
