The Milford Preservation Trust will celebrate General Washington Victory Days at the Minuteman House (aka Downs house) at 139 North Street on Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“October is notable and worthy of celebration as the month which saw an entire British Army surrender at Saratoga, N.Y. on October 17, 1777 as well as the month which saw the decisive surrender of British General Lord Cornwallis to General George Washington at Yorktown, Va. on October 19, 1781,” states an announcement about the event.
Tax deductible donations to help restore the house will be accepted.
An actor portraying Milford’s Joseph Plumb Martin, a famous private in the Continental Army, will be at the house. He will talk of seeing General Washington wielding a pickaxe at Yorktown. He will also speak about the necessary yet dangerous seizure of Redoubt #10 by Martin and other Americans at Yorktown. Historical artifacts of General George Washington and cannonballs will be displayed.
Apple pie will be available for sale to help the Trust restore the house to its 1775 condition.
