Due to state budget reductions, the Connecticut State Library has announced that support for reQuest, the statewide union catalog and interlibrary loan system, will be discontinued as of June 30, according to a press release from Milford Library Director Christine Angeli.
The state collection of research databases, known as iCONN will still be supported.
Faced with this disruption to library services, the State Library has partnered with Bibliomation, a non-profit organization that provides for the technological and automation needs of libraries, to implement a new union catalog and interlibrary loan system based on Evergreen open source software.
The State Library anticipates the new system being available by Fall 2015.
While this transition occurs the Milford Public Library will stop all requests for materials from other libraries, using the statewide reQuest system, on May 15. This will ensure that all materials loaned through the existing system will be returned to the lending library by June 30, library officials said.
“The library does plan to offer some level of interlibrary loan service to our patrons during the gap period of the stopping of reQuest and the implementation of the new system,” Angeli’s press release states. “However, these services may be limited. Under the ConnectiCard program, Milford residents will still be able to borrow materials, in person, from other libraries.”
State Librarian Ken Wiggin stated in a memo to the Connecticut Library community, “I realize that this will mean a disruption in service over the summer, but with your patience and understanding, we will have a new, more cost effective resource sharing system which will allow for the savings we need to continue to provide the residents of Connecticut with high quality information resources and a robust resource sharing system.”
