Behind Matt Ferraiolo’s complete-game six-hitter, the Milford Post 196 American Legion team defeated Cheshire, 5-3, in the Round of 16 double-elimination state tournament at Cubeta Stadium in Stamford on Saturday afternoon.
The right-hander, who pitched a no-hitter against Simsbury in the play-in round, limited Cheshire, the Zone III champions, to six hits — allowing one earned run and striking out nine.
Milford will square off with Zone II rivals Branford at 9:30 a.m. on Monday at Cubeta Stadium in a winners’ bracket match-up.
Ferraiolo improved his personal mark to 8-1, out-dueling recently graduated Foran High ace Ryan Manning, who drew the start for Cheshire.
Manning worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits, striking out seven and walking three.
Sean Cameron scored the go-ahead run for Post 196 in the top of the seventh inning. He slashed a one-out double off of Manning, moved to third on a balk and scored when Cheshire reliever Ryan Fowler uncorked a wild pitch.
Joe Zanghi went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI for Milford, while Ed Michaud added two hits and one run scored.
Christian Baglini notched a run-scoring double for Milford.
