Man shot intruder at Point Lookout home Saturday night

A home intruder remains in critical condition after being shot Saturday by a 67-year-old Point Lookout resident who said the man broke into his house.

According to police, a call came in shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday.

Responding officers learned that the homeowner shot the intruder after a brief scuffle inside the home and the intruder fled on foot after being shot. Officers located and apprehended the man in the water a short distance away from the home, according to Police Spokesman Jeff Nielsen. The man was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment of a single gunshot wound, and remains there in critical condition, police said.

According to the complaint, the 67-year-old resident was alerted to a possible intruder after hearing a noise outside his home. Upon investigating, the homeowner found a screen to the residence forced open and then was confronted by a male.

A struggle ensued and the homeowner retreated to the second floor of his home and armed himself with a handgun, police said.

The homeowner returned to the first floor of his residence and found the man attempting to steal a television set. The homeowner told police he began pleading with the man to leave his home and the suspect again engaged in a physical altercation with the homeowner, who then shot the intruder in the chest.

The subject has been identified as Benjamin Prue, 25, of an uncertain address. He remains in critical condition at Yale New Haven Hospital in police custody.

Police said a gray 2000 Volvo with Connecticut registration 409 YDD which is owned by Prue was parked a short distance away from the victim’s home with the trunk lid opened. Inside the vehicle, police said they observed evidence of crack cocaine and paraphernalia used to ingest it. The vehicle has been seized as evidence in the investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident or who may have seen the vehicle in the area is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Chacon at the Milford Police Detective Division at (203) 877-1465.
