Richard Anthony Salerno

Richard Anthony Salerno passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 20, 2013 from complication related to Parkinson’s disease.  He lived a wonderful life for over 53 years in Laurel Beach in Milford, CT. with his devoted wife, Phyllis Simone Salerno.

Richard was born in Derby, CT on October 31, 1930 to Anthony and Phyllis Riccio Salerno.

He received his bachelor’s degree in education from Southern Connecticut State College, where he also enjoyed a storied football career.  Richard went on to receive his master’s degree in education from Fairfield University, and his sixth year degree from Fordham University.  He was a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the US Navy, where he proudly served aboard the USS Essex, CV9 during the Korean Conflict.

He greatly enjoyed his many years as an elementary school principal at Point Beach and John F. Kennedy Schools.  He was Chairman of the United Way of Milford, Education Division, served on the Milford Board of Alderman, was a lector at St. Gabriel Church, was President of the Southern CT State University Alumni Association, President of the Elementary School Principal’s Association and was a volunteer for Hospice and Sage Services of New Haven.

Richard loved playing tennis, sailing, cheering on the NY Giants and spending time with his family.  He will leave behind a legacy of family, love, God, humor and his favorite saying “What you do, do well.”

He is survived by his children, Richard Jr. and Lisa  Salerno of Fairfield, Felicia and Matt Arciuolo of Milford, Claudia and Todd Walles of S. Glastonbury, Laura and Steve Pitaniello of Fairfield, daughter-in-law Paula Salerno of Branford and Tami Collins of Milford, a faithful and loving caregiver.  “Papa” will be greatly missed by his fourteen grandchildren, Matthew, Gabrielle, Christian, Daniel, Tyler, Jack, Juliette, Drew, Jonmichel, Andrew, Richard James, Jessica, Camille and Olivia.

He was predeceased by his son Paul James Salerno and brother Anthony “Skip” Salerno.

Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad St., Milford, handled arrangements.
