Joseph Robert Kashmann

Joseph Robert Kashmann, 89, of Stamford, VT died on Sunday January 6, 2013 at North Adams Commons after an extended debilitating illness.

Joe was born in Hartford, CT on October 1, 1923, to Seymour and Beatrice Kashmann.

He graduated from Hartford Public High School, received a bachelor’s degree from the University of CT, and masters of science degrees in chemistry from the University of Bridgeport and Southern CT State University.

Joe was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Army Air Corps. Following his military service, Joe was a chemistry teacher at Joseph A. Foran High School, Jonathan Law High School, and Milford High School in Milford, CT. He also taught chemistry at Southern CT State University and was the recipient of numerous National Science Foundation study grants.

Beginning in the 1970s, Joe maintained a second home in Readsboro, VT and moved there permanently in 1982 following his retirement. He and his wife Marjorie were avid downhill skiers for over 40 years and Joe skied until he was 84 years old. He and Marjorie also enjoyed square dancing, tennis and horseback riding.

Joe was active in politics in Milford, CT and Readsboro, VT. He was a former chairman of the Democratic Committee in Readsboro. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Alpenwald Association.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, the former Marjorie Rosoff, whom he married on January 15, 1950, three daughters: Jyll (Jill) Kashmann of West Hartford, CT; Betsy Kashmann-Myrow and her husband, Jay of Warwick, NY; and Margaret Moss Kashmann and her partner, Eric Leighton of Readsboro, VT, and two grandchildren, Jora Myrow of Austin, TX and Uriah Kashmann-Myrow of Warwick, NY.

He was predeceased by a brother, Malvin Kashmann, and a sister, Doris Kashmann.

According to his wishes, Joseph donated his body to the University of VT Medical School.
