The Foran High boys basketball team captured the Platt Tech Christmas Tournament title with a 45-31 victory over Bullard-Havens of Bridgeport on Thursday.
Tourney MVP Austin Woods scored 15 points with 10 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead the Lions (3-3) to the crown.
Bob Notholt scored eight points, Casey McCone six and Kevin Green six for coach Tim Swaller against the Tigers (3-2).
Foran took a “don’t take your foot off the gas mentality” into its opening-round game with Sheehan of Wallingford a day earlier.
The Lions played 32 minutes of intense basketball en route to an 80-54 win over the Titans
“We came into this game with a 1-3 record and with three very tough losses (to Fairfield Prep, Wilbur Cross and SCC Hammonasset Division rival Hand of Madison),” Swaller said.“”I didn’t go right out and tell these kids that our backs were against the wall. But we didn’t want to lose three games in a row.”
Even without one of the team’s best players, Casey McCone, who sat out the game still feelings the effects of the flu, the Lions took a commanding 19-6 first-quarter lead and led 41-20 at halftime.
“I told them even though we had that big, first-half lead not to get complacent,” Swaller said. “They didn’t. We came out and played a very good second half.”
For the game, the Lions shot 56 percent from the field (22-of-39) and converted 18-of-21 free-throw attempts to win going away.
Defensively, Foran held Sheehan (2-2) to a 14-of-59 shooting night from the field (23 percent). The Titans converted 15-of-21 tries from the foul line (71 percent).
Foran was also dominant on the boards, where the Lions had a 44-30 margin, led by 18 from Woods, who also scored 17 points.
Notholt, a 6-5 junior forward, led the team with 19 points. He also had five rebounds.
“Our guard play was good tonight as well,” Swaller said.
In that department, Green scored 14 points and dished out nine assists.
Matt Gomes scored 17 points, and was 8-for-9 from the foul line. He added four assists.
Nick Weissauer knocked down a pair of 3-pointers.
Sophomore guard Brandon Rentas led coach Joe Gaetano’s Titans with a game-high 21 points.
Foran will host Jonathan Law at 7 p.m. on Friday.
