East Shore Middle School groundbreaking is today

The official groundbreaking ceremony for Phase 1 of the East Shore Middle School Improvement Project will be held today, Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the school beginning at 4 p.m.

The project incorporates three phases, which include:

- New eight-classroom wing (additional 9,858 sq. ft.)

- New music instruction area (additional 4,829 sq. ft.)

- New media center (additional 4,141 sq. ft.)

- Expanded cafeteria (2,183 sq. ft)

- Refurbished surrounding landscape areas (walkways, courtyard space, etc.)

Expected guests include several city officials, members of elected city boards, school officials, and representatives of the project planners (Silver Petrucelli and Associates) as well as the construction firm (Bismark Construction).

The group is expected to move outdoors (weather permitting) shortly after 4 p.m. to proceed with the formal groundbreaking.  Comments will be delivered at that time by Mayor Benjamin Blake, Dr. Elizabeth E. Feser, Bill Silver, and Matthew Woods.

Artistic renditions of the final look of the project will be on display.

Light refreshments will be served in the media center following the outdoor ceremony.

Seabreeze Elementary School was built and completed in 1952 on the parcel located at 240 Chapel Street. The original building occupied 26,689 sq. ft. and served students in Grades K-8.

In 1991, the district adopted a middle school model, converting and renaming Seabreeze to East Shore Middle School. The school serves students living in the eastern portion of the city in Grades 6-8.

During the same period, Kay Avenue Elementary became West Shore Middle School; Central Grammar Elementary became Harborside Middle School.

Over the years, East Shore has benefited from three large-scale remodeling/addition projects, bringing its current size to 60,780 sq. ft. The construction project poised to begin this month will bring an additional 21,011 square feet to the school’s operating space.
