The award ceremony, attended by students, families, friends and guidance counselors, took place on April 10 at the Freelove Baldwin Stow DAR Chapter House in Milford.
Chairperson Elizabeth Keefe presented the awards for outstanding contributions to school and community to the students, who accrued hundreds of hours o f community service.
The Good Citizen Award recognizes students for the four outstanding qualities of a good citizen: Dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism.
The students were chosen as Good Citizen winners by faculty vote and were required to write an essay on the subject of “How does one’s personal heritage affect one’s duties to our nation?” Students submitted excellent applications, and Kiernan Black was chosen as the Freelove Baldwin Stow Chapter overall winner. Her application was submitted to the state competition, and Kiernan went on to receive the 2014 State of Connecticut Good Citizen Scholarship, awarded in Hartford. The ceremony was attended by National Society DAR President General Lynn Forney-Young.
This year’s Milford winners are Isabel Nodiff, Platt Technical High School; Kiernan Black, Lauralton Hall; Valeriya Pozdnyakova, Foran High School, and Gabriel Salles, Jonathan Law High School.
Each student received a certificate, a pin, and a monetary award.
